Rooted Fragments
Rooted Fragments is a motion graphic and video installation reflecting on cultural memory, identity, and the imaginative freedom of childhood. Inspired by Amelia Winger-Bearskin’s Sky World Death World at Sunset, the piece explores how early experiences, family histories, and small personal objects shape who we become.
The project draws from my own family archive, combining personal photographs with self-animated 3D trinkets to create a layered visual language that feels intimate and nostalgic. These fragments function as symbols of memory and curiosity, inviting viewers to reflect on their own cultural upbringing and formative moments. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the installation creates space for viewers to project their own experiences and sense of belonging.
Accompanying the visual work is an original written poem, developed alongside the installation, that reflects on growth, roots, imagination, and self-definition. The writing expands the project beyond the visual, framing the work as both a personal meditation and an open invitation to consider how identity is formed over time.
Created using Adobe After Effects, Rooted Fragments explores themes of cultural identity, memory, and the persistence of childhood imagination. The project invites viewers to reconnect with their own origin stories and consider how creativity evolves throughout life.
